Love Psychedelico, ‘This Is Love Psychedelico’ (Hacktone)

If Noel Gallagher doesn’t go gaga over this, we give up.

BY BARRY WALTERS 05.30.08 1:45 PM

Concocting an Asian update on ’90s Britpop that often eclipses the catchiness of their original sources, this Tokyo duo offers further proof that the right variation on proven Beatles and Stones riffs can leap over any language barrier. Singer Kumi brays in deadpan Japanese, saturated with enough seemingly random English slang to ensure that the hooks stick without ever revealing any linear logic — that’s the “psychedelico” part. The “love” is in the exactitude of the arrangements: Each precision-engineered riff and filigree fits precisely in the necessary spots. No fat, no filler, all fun.

“The group sings sunny, late-’60s inspired guitar pop, and its so finely constructed that when Kumi mixes both English and japanese into her lyrics you never even notice. In fact if we didn’t know the group was Japanese we’d easily mistake it for any number of excellent power-pop bands that flourish in the Midwest, hooked equally on Brian Wilson and Cheap Trick.”

“Japanese pop-rock duo winds up pulling off Top 40 pop-rock better than most American acts today. Now that’s a hell of an accomplishment.”

Full story here

Oddly enough, Tokyo-based rock group Love Psychedelico has more in common with the British invasion than with its contemporary Japanese pop groups, and its U.S. debut, This Is Love Psychedelico, struts its western influences better than many bands this side of the Pacific. Pairing gutsy, Stones-inspired guitar riffs with undeniably catchy pop melodies, guitarist Naoki Sato (one half of the duo) mixes influences and styles as seamlessly as lead singer Kumi oscillates between Japanese and English lyrics. The end result is a bit derivative, but has a unique flair and a vitality all its own.

“Standing Bird” opens the record on a biting, bluesy guitar spike that immediately reminds the listener of Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing.” But the song quickly makes it its own, thriving on Kumi’s gritty female vocals. Combining sweet melodies with feisty groans, the song proves infectious whether or not you understand the Japanese or the English.

Love Psychedelico formed in 1997, and has a very large following in the Japanese rock scene, moving over 2 million copies of its 2001 debut record, The Greatest Hits. This Is Love Psychedelico is comprised of cuts from the band’s previous Japanese releases, including most of tracks found on the group’s 2005 compilation CD, Early Times. Because of this, the group’s Stateside debut sounds more like the work of seasoned rock veterans than first-timers, featuring countless radio-ready songs and great album tracks to boot.

The band continues to tour in Japan and across Asia, but will be in the States beginning in July, working on a new album in Los Angeles with a possible U.S. tour to follow.

From Japan with beads, bells and incense comes Love Psychedelico with (what else?) “This Is Love Psychedelico” (Hacktone, A-). A frisky, frothy co-ed duo, they’ve been twisting my brain inside out with their nimbly shape-shifting, bilingual Japlish lyrics (listen long enough and it makes sense) and super-catchy guitar- and keyboard-buzzing rock, which samples classic flavors from the B-52s to Mott the Hoople to “Money” man Barrett Strong.

The duo has sold four million albums on home turf since 2001; this U.S. introduction represents a “best of” those domestic releases.
